Petrofac, a leading provider of services to the global energy industry, has been awarded a facilities management contract by CNR International (CNRI) offshore the Ivory Coast, West Africa.

The initial three-year, multi-million pound, contract will see Petrofac's Asset Solutions business providing integrated services for the Espoir Ivoirien Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. Around 110 personnel currently supporting the FPSO, including those onshore and on the vessel, will transition to Petrofac from BW Offshore following the recent sale of the vessel to CNRI. The transition of people and operatorship is expected to complete before the end of July.

The contract builds upon Petrofac's existing strong relationship with CNRI in the UKCS, which has centred around the provision of operations and maintenance services. The contract will be managed from Petrofac's technical hub in Aberdeen, using decades of experience in the mature and highly regulated UKCS market.

Most readers would already know that Canadian National Railway's (TSE:CNR) stock increased by 2.8% over the past month. Given that stock prices are usually aligned with a company's financial performance in the long-term, we decided to investigate if the company's decent financials had a hand to play in the recent price move. Specifically, we decided to study Canadian National Railway's ROE in this article.

Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors' money. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Canadian National Railway is:

26% = CA$5.3b ÷ CA$20b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every CA$1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated CA$0.26 in profit.

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

To begin with, Canadian National Railway has a pretty high ROE which is interesting. Additionally, the company's ROE is higher compared to the industry average of 18% which is quite remarkable. However, we are curious as to how the high returns still resulted in a flat growth for Canadian National Railway in the past five years. We reckon that there could be some other factors at play here that's limiting the company's growth. These include low earnings retention or poor allocation of capital

As a next step, we compared Canadian National Railway's net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 11% in the same period.

Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. It's important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is CNR fairly valued? Despite having a normal three-year median payout ratio of 39% (implying that the company keeps 61% of its income) over the last three years, Canadian National Railway has seen a negligible amount of growth in earnings as we saw above. Therefore, there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.

In addition, Canadian National Railway has been paying dividends over a period of at least ten years suggesting that keeping up dividend payments is way more important to the management even if it comes at the cost of business growth. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 38% of its profits over the next three years. As a result, Canadian National Railway's ROE is not expected to change by much either, which we inferred from the analyst estimate of 30% for future ROE.

On the whole, we do feel that Canadian National Railway has some positive attributes. Although, we are disappointed to see a lack of growth in earnings even in spite of a high ROE and and a high reinvestment rate. We believe that there might be some outside factors that could be having a negative impact on the business. Having said that, looking at the current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings are expected to gain momentum. The Kremlin may be preparing a provocation at the Kursk nuclear power plant

The Russians may be planning a provocation at the Kursk NPP. They are currently making preparations to evacuate the population from the zone of probable radioactive contamination in case of "use of conventional means of destruction by a probable enemy": local authorities have obliged to create a transportation register.

At the same time, up to 57 thousand people are planned to be evacuated in case of provocation, while in Kursk alone there are at least 435 thousand residents. The corresponding documents were at the disposal of the Center for National Resistance.

The CNR claims that Russia is planning a provocation at the Kursk nuclear power plant. This may be evidenced by the preparation of the region for the evacuation of the local population.

"According to the underground, the Kursk region continues to prepare for evacuation from the zone of probable radioactive contamination, in case of an accident at the nuclear power plant. For this purpose, local authorities have been tasked with creating a transportation registry. The relevant documents have fallen into the hands of the Center for National Resistance," the report says.

At the same time, if the provocation is carried out, most of the inhabitants of the region Russia will throw to the mercy of fate: to rescue the occupants are going to save only a few percent of the population of the Kursk region.

"In total, they plan to evacuate from 21 to 57 thousand people, while the population of the region is more than 1 million people, and Kursk itself 435 thousand. That is, we are talking about 5% of the population of the regions, which indicates the selectivity of those who got on the list," - said the Center for National Resistance.

"Lucky" people who will be on the evacuation lists in case the Russians carry out a provocation at the Kursk NPP will be taken to the north of the region, in particular, to the settlements of Zheleznogorsky, Bolshoye Soldatskoye, Shchegry, Gorshechnoye.

"Note that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are operating exclusively on the territory of Ukraine and are not planning any attacks on nuclear power plants. This provocation is necessary for the Russians themselves to distract the world from the seizure of ZNPP," the CNS summarized.

The distance from the Kursk nuclear power plant to the border town of Glukhov in Sumy Region is more than 100 km.

"All the Alpine glaciers, at all altitudes, are above zero and the situation is quite critical", said Claudio Tei, researcher and meteorologist at the CNR and the Lamma Consortium, on the heat wave that is sweeping Central and Northern Italy, due to a sub-tropical anticyclone coming from Africa.

"The hottest days predicted by the models are Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 August, with peaks of 38 degrees in some cities and more than 7 degrees above this season's average, even 10 degrees above seasonal values in the western Alps," Tei explains, "while the zero temperature at altitude is expected to rise up to 5,000 metres. Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. (ANSA) - ROME, JUL 21 - The National Research Council (CNR) and the national workplace accident and illness insurance agency Inail have developed a heat stress forecasting system for the initial screening of risks to outdoor workers engaged in moderate or intense physical activity across the country. The maps, developed under the project "Worklimate 2.0" monitoring the impact of environmental thermal stress on workers' health and productivity, show a three-day heat stress risk forecast at four time intervals during the day: 8:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 20:00 CET.

The danger scale for workers ranges from green, involving no risk, to red, the highest level, via yellow and orange, which indicate low and moderate risk respectively.

The FIR always recalls the great traditions of the national resistance movements and their historical legacy. One of the most important events of the French Resistance is the creation of a common umbrella organization of all forces of armed and political resistance 80 years ago.

The French resistance against the German occupation and the Vichy regime began as early as 1940 with the German occupation. The leftist organizations had already formed their fighting units (including Francs-tireurs et partisans FTP).

General Charles de Gaulle's appeal of June 18, 1940, also motivated conservative forces and representatives of the military to resist. However, their actions were not sufficiently coordinated in the first period. The maquis in particular maintained only a few relations with each other, and the isolation of the resistance groups prevented jointly organized, successful actions.

For this reason, de Gaulle commissioned Jean Moulin, who had served as prefect in the Aveyron department before the German invasion, to bring together the Resistance groups in France. In the spring of 1943, Moulin developed the idea of creating a kind of underground parliament where a common political program and strategy of action could be agreed upon among the various groups. All political parties and groups of the Resistance were to have seats and votes in this body. Despite its illegality, Jean Moulin achieved through many discussions that the "Conseil national de la Résistance" (CNR) met for the first time under his leadership on May 27, 1943, in an apartment in the 6th arrondissement of Paris.

The eight main Résistance movements took part: the communist Front National, the Ceux de la Libération group, the Ceux de la Résistance group, the Libération Nord, the Libération Sud, the Organisation civile et militaire, the Combat group and the Francs-Tireurs. In addition, there were representatives of the two major unions, CGT and CFDT. The CNR also included representatives of the six main parties of the Third Republic, the PCF, the SFIO, the Parti républicain, radical et radical-socialiste, the Christian Democrats, the Alliance démocratique, and the Catholic-conservative Fédération républicaine.

Shortly after the CNR was constituted, Jean Moulin was arrested by the Gestapo. Even under torture, he revealed nothing and died on transport to Germany. His silence prevented the Nazis from breaking up the CNR. For reasons of conspiracy, plenary sessions were no longer held, and an executive bureau of five members directed further work. Importantly, the CNR created several commissions and committees, such as the Comité d'Action contre la Déportation, the Comité des Actions Immédiates, and the Comité des Œuvres Sociales de la Résistance. One group dealt with the falsification of documents as well as the procurement of supplies.

The CNR charged the Comité général d'étude with preparing a political platform for a post-liberation France. It was a sign of unity in struggle that the Conseil National de la Résistance's program for profound social renewal was soon adopted. The goal was to establish a truly social democracy based on a planned economy and de-monopolization. This included the nationalization of energy supply, insurance companies and banks, the establishment of a unified social insurance system and the socialization of Renault.

Many of the points laid down here were placed on the political agenda in France after liberation. Some of them were realized, but later withdrawn as part of the privatizations. The governments in France accepted the importance of this program when, 10 years ago, in memory of the important role of the CNR in the organization of the political and armed resistance for the liberation of France, they declared by law the day of the founding meeting, May 27, as the "Journée nationale de la Résistance." For the organizations of veterans and today's anti-fascists, the memory of the CNR is enduring legacy of resistance for today and tomorrow.

The Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Cnr; ´National Research Council´) and the Deutsche Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI; ´German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence´) signed a Scientific Cooperation Agreement on Friday in the setting of Villa Vigoni on Lake Como. The agreement was signed in recent days by Cnr President Maria Chiara Carrozza, and was signed at Villa Vigoni by DFKI CEO and scientific director Prof. Antonio Krüger.

With a network of 88 institutes distributed throughout Italy grouped into seven departments covering the main areas of science and culture, and nearly ten thousand employees, the Cnr is the leading public research organization in Italy. DFKI is Germany's leading institution for artificial intelligence, with over a thousand employees in eight cities.

The signed agreement defines a collaborative framework to be subsequently concretized through specific operational programs that will include activities such as the development of joint research programs, visits and exchanges of research personnel, the organization of workshops and conferences, and other mutually agreed cooperation activities.

Contacts between the two institutions, already existing within EU projects, have recently been reinforced through the "Italy-Germany WEBinar Series" devoted to "Artificial Intelligence: Methods and Applications." Three of the five seminars in the series were given by DFKI researchers, while, for Cnr, researchers from the main institutes with expertise in AI (Cnr-IIt, Cnr-Isti and Cnr-Icar) participated. A more institutional seminar - "AI Strategies and Partnerships in Italy and Germany" - was attended by DFKI Director Antonio Krüger and Giuseppe De Pietro for Cnr and FAIR. In this regard, the Defendants allegedly made material misrepresentations and omissions of material facts in the Proxy concerning, among other things: (1) the scope of the Standstill Provisions and the fact that CD&R made actual offers and proposals to acquire Cornerstone, in breach of those Provisions; (2) the fact that Cornerstone's financial projections used by its financial advisor in connection with the Merger negotiations were revised downward at CD&R's direction, which helped to support a lower per share acquisition price; and (3) Cornerstone's parallel sales process to divest its metal coil coatings business for $500 million and the Defendants' failure to account for this sale in the valuation of the Company.
