UK-based subsea technology and services firm has won a contract for a geo-environmental survey at Flotation Energy's planned Cenos floating offshore wind farm.

Located in the Central North Sea some 200 kilometres off the northeast coast of Scotland, the 1.4 GW Cenos floating wind development will cover approximately 333 square kilometres.

Rovco, which launched a dedicated marine site characterisation business line, will use its multi-purpose, DP2 survey vessel, the Glomar Supporter, to conduct the survey.

The project will comprise subsea studies of the floating wind turbine generators, mooring line anchor locations, inter-array cables, fixed foundation substation areas, and the portion of export cables within these locations.

Rovco will also acquire geophysical and benthic information for the environmental impact assessment and the engineering processes from engineering to early front-end engineering and design study.

The geophysical element of the workscope requires the acquisition of a multi-beam echo sounder, side scan sonar, magnetometer, sub-bottom profiler, and multi-channel seismic data along with associated analysis, processing, interpretation, and reporting.

Flotation Energy's partner on Cenos is Norwegian-offshore wind company Vårgrønn - a joint venture between Eni-owned Plenitude and HitecVision.

Flotation Energy has awarded Rovco a contract to carry out a geo-environmental survey at its planned Cenos floating offshore wind farm, 200 kilometres off the northeast coast of Scotland.

Located in the Central North Sea, the 1.4 GW floating offshore wind project will cover approximately 333 square kilometres.

For the survey, Rovco will deploy its multi-purpose, custom-configured DP2 survey vessel, the Glomar Supporter.

Rovco's scope of work involves the acquisition of benthic and geophysical information to provide detailed data to inform environmental impact assessment (EIA) consents and the engineering processes from engineering to early front-end engineering and design (FEED) study.

"The successful delivery of our survey campaign with Rovco enables us to maintain our fast-track delivery schedule for Cenos, a project that will decarbonise North Sea oil and gas assets and remove over 2 million tonnes of CO2 a year, helping to support Scotland towards its 2045 Net Zero targets," said Dan Wright, Supply Chain Manager at Flotation Energy.

Rovco said that the geophysical element of the work scope requires the acquisition of a multi-beam echo sounder, side scan sonar, magnetometer, sub-bottom profiler, and multi-channel seismic data along with associated analysis, processing, interpretation, and reporting.

It is expected that the project will comprise subsea studies of the floating offshore wind turbines, mooring line anchor locations, inter-array cables, fixed foundation substation areas, and the portion of export cables that fall within these locations.

On the 1.4 GW Cenos floating wind farm, which is planned to power oil and gas platforms in the North Sea, Flotation Energy has teamed up with Vårgrønn, a joint venture between Eni's Plenitude and the Norwegian energy investor HitecVision.

Earlier this year, the partners secured a lease in the Scottish INTOG (Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas) round.

According to information on the project's website, Cenos floating offshore wind farm will consist of 70-100 floating turbines, each with a capacity of between 14 MW and 20 MW.

Offshore wind developers, Flotation Energy, Vårgrønn, have submitted planning applications for an onshore substation connect with the 560MW Green Volt offshore wind farm.

Submitted to Aberdeenshire Council for the required onshore infrastructure, the plans would see the new substation provide renewable electricity to oil an gas platforms replacing gas turbines with offshore wind power.

The new onshore substation - set to be located near New Deer - will also connect Green Volt to the UK grid.

The plans also include a proposed cable route - selected based on stakeholder feedback - which aims to limit social and environmental impact.

"Open and honest dialogue with local communities and stakeholders enables us to maximise the benefits of the Green Volt project to the local area while minimising any negative impacts. By stimulating a robust local supply chain, we will create nearly 3,000 jobs within the first three years and almost 100 jobs across the 35-year operation of the Green Volt windfarm," said Mark McDonald, Green Volt stakeholder lead.

"Submitting the onshore planning application marks another key milestone for Green Volt, keeping it on track to start generating power from 2027 and making it one of the world's largest floating offshore windfarms, as well as the most advanced oil and gas decarbonisation project in the UK."

Tom Harrison, onshore consenter added: "By working with the local community from an early stage, we have created a strong application that will boost the local economy and infrastructure. The Green Volt project will also make a significant contribution to a just transition by transferring skills and experience from oil and gas to offshore wind as well as establishing a new supply chain centred around the North Sea.

"As a key asset, Green Volt will contribute £2.5 billion of gross value add (GVA) to the economy over its lifetime, with £759 million of this expected to be retained in Scotland."
